pinion angle

I was at the track on friday night and I could not get my car to 60'
I run BFG Drag Radials , 275 60 15 , I have Spohn's TA, LCA and RELOW brackets. My pinion angle is set at -1 deg. The car is lifting so hard and fast it feels like it is unloading the car just off the line. It spins real quick then hooks. My best short time, friday, was a 1.72 . I usually short time in the low 1.6's to high 1.5's, but since I changed my converter over the winter, I can't get the car off the line.

Do you think I need to change my front springs and struts, which I do not really want to do. Work on my pinion angle, Any hint where you think it should be. Any help would be great. I would like to go back to the track this wednesday with some changes done to the car.

Quite a few people here have had luck with settings between -4* and -6* pinion angle..

Throw back in the convertor and see if that was the only factor. Then go from there. What TC did you have before and what are you running now?

i would not set it as far as 4 or 6. IMHO -2* is about as far as i would go, unless it was a trailored track car. I assume you upped your stall speed?

Yes, I do drive the car to and from the track. I did up the the stall, from 2200 to 3400, still a lock-up.

Is there a "quietest setting for pinion angle" out there. My Mosar is SO loud I've got to try something. I've already tried another set of gears from a different mfg. but I just can't stand to drive it. I am open for any suggestions since I'm not getting anything from Mosar.

I don't think your pinion angle is the problem. The only reason to set the pinion angle is because under high torque, pinion gear will try to walk up the ring gear as the wheels resist the rotation of the differential. There will be some flex in the torque arm and the whole idea is to have the pinion angle at 0* under acceleration so that you minimize the power loss in the u-joint.

In normal cars -1* is fine. For racing only people do -2 or -3, but I think it puts extra stress on u-joint under normal driving. Not sure on this one. But in either case I don't think it would cause unloading you are describing.

sounds you already have LCA relocation brackets. I am no expert here, you so may want to keep asking, but drag shocks might be your answer.

Also do you have an open or posi diff?

As for the noise level, pinion angle has nothing to do with it. Your gears (unless you have a bad bearing) is what is making the noise. Pinion angle affects u-joint which is on the outside, but that thing is quite in any case.

If your car is squating a bunch on takeoff it could be hitting the rubber axle stops and unloding the suspention .. I went through that and now use a airbag on the pass side rear.. it helps a bunch

Is it hooking off the line, spinning a few feet out and then hooking again or is it spinning and eventually hooks?

FWIW, with some slight tweaking a stock suspension + those tires should be enough to get you into the 1.5-1.6 range assuming everything is in good working order and you have some control over how hard you hit the tires
