where exactly do the mount to and what exactly do they tie together on these cars

Here's some.... not all are like this, but they give an idea. What you're mostly trying to do, is to do a better job than the factory of tying the sheet-metal stuff at the rear of the car that's only connected to the front of the car by the floor pan and the C-pillar. Look at where there's reinforcements to the metal in this pic, and it should become rather obvious why these cars need those.
