2nd Gen vs. 3rd Gen suspension

What's the difference between the 2nd gen front suspension (1974-81) and the 3rd gen front suspension? Are any parts similar? I'm asking because I have a friend who wants to swap front springs with a pair from a GTA. He says they're interchangeable, anyone know for sure ?

I can't see how anything would be interchangeable between the two.

I have both, a 71 and an 85. Actually there is quite a bit of similarity, but not interchangeability. They both have a lower control arm with the spring between that and the 'frame'. Both use a steering gear box/tie rod setup. Big difference is the 2nd gen uses upper control arms and shocks while the 3rd gen uses a strut. I have to agree with the other responses, nothing is likely to interchange. Springs may fit, but even if they fit physically, what about spring rates? I have the 85 suspension apart right now, but not the 71, otherwise I would do a side by side for ya.
