How To Remove Tie Rod Sleeve

i searched around quite a bit and did not find any way to get the tie rod sleeves off. i assumed it would be pretty straightfoward (loosen the clamps and turn the sleeve to adjust) but it isnt. i just need to adjust them slightly due to some front end work but i cant get them to move at all!!!!! now i want to go ahead and buy new ends (which will put my cars driving date back further ) but i cant get these old ones off. whats this about a special tool i need to remove them?????

Sounds like they're rusted a bit. You shouldn't need anything more than a correct sized socket to get the sleeves loose.

The tool does make it easier to turn the stock style sleeves. As you found out the stock sleeves rust, and from the inside out. There is a slot in the sleeve that allows water to get into them.

Anyway, to get the stock ones off to put the Coleman ones on, first remove the clamp bolts and pry the clamps open.

Slide the clamps out of the way.

Find the slot in the sleeve and pry it open. Also use some penatrating oil and spray/drip/squirt it into the slot of the sleeve.

Try using a prybar (or large screwdriver) placed into the slot to turn the sleeve. This also helps to pry the sleeve open to allow it to turn easier.

Once the sleeves are off wirebrush the threaded portions of the tie-rods. Place some anti-seize on the threads before threading the jam nuts and the new sleeves on.

I also like to squirt oil into the sleeve before installing it. Anything to prevent it rusting up.

RBob.

i figured i would have to resort to some "other" matters, like a big crowbar! i wanted to just adjust them while waiting for my new coleman ones to arrive so i can drive the car and test the new brakes and clutch but i guess ill just have to wait another week or so before she can hit the road......2 months and counting
