First off, when you say you don't want a sidewall bigger then 55, the sidewall is determined by a ratio in comparison to the width. 275x.55 is different then 265x.55

Tirerack.com can help you with who makes what size.

If you look up the specs for a 255/50R16, you wouldn't ideally want to put it on anything narrower than an 8" rim. So you wouldn't want to put a 275/50 or 275/55 on an 8" rim either. Upgrade to 17x9 or wider and do it right.

It would not be the best, but my dad talked to year one, and he is running 295s on an 8 inch wheel. Year one said they would fit, and he has not had a problem since.

295s would fit on an 8 in rim if the sidewall is tall enough. But there is no tire company that makes those sizes for a 16 in wheel in a passenger car size. They have them in Light Truck size!

thanx for all the info guys. i thought the sidewall was a ratio of the width but i wasnt sure. i think ill just stick with a 155 for the rears. id like to upgrade to 17x9 but i still want the iroc look and the 17s only come in x8

BF Goodwrench Radial TAs 295/50/16 on an 8 inch wheel is what my dad uses on the back of his 71 Formula. A guy at work had the same setup on a monte carlo.
