Power rack & pinion question

Does anybody know if you can run a rack & pinion without connecting the power steering lines to it? Obviously the steering effort will go up, but will anything be damaged if it is run without the lines connected? Can you put some fluid in it and connect the lines together? I may later decide to run a power steering pump, so I want to have the option available without switching racks. Yes, this question is really about rack & pinion steering

Thanks!

The power rack and pinion, disconnected would take more effort to turn than a manual rack, usually geared different. It shouldn't screw up a rack if it (the lines) were plugged up (no guarantees) Manual racks don't have any fluid in them, usually only grease.

Why not just hook up the lines, or a different rack?

Yea, I will probably just hook the lines up and run a power rack. I was thinking I could get away without power since I will be putting the engine in the back, but I wanted the option of going power without having to buy two different racks. Good point about the effort probably being higher on a power rack with the lines disconnected than on a manual rack.

Anybody have a suggestion for a 2 - 2.5 turn power rack?

That is not a LS1 rack, That is a different type of a rack. I belive its an appleton or a recirculating setup.
