Lightweight Batteries

I did not know where else to post, but since weight affects handling I put it here.

Does anyone have any experience with the lighweight race batteries. I have seen some with a weight of 11lbs and 750 "pulse amps" I dont know what a pulse amp is.

My question would be the reliability for road racing and the ability to start the car if you stalled or spun out.

The only thing that would be drawing amps in my car after starting would be the ingition, gages, fans, and brake lights. The car would also have a regular OEM type alternator.

Any help appreciated.

Things like the dynabats work pretty much like a normal battery. Really, if it’s not a daily driver that’s expected to run in freezing temps… you can get away with a _MUCH_ smaller battery. My brother gets away with using a tiny lawn tractor battery mounted in the trunk of his project car and the only time I remember him having a problem with it was on a 20* day after the car sat for roughly 4months…, BTW, it's a fairly low compression engine, about 8.6:1 that should make it easier to crank, but it also has it's timing locked out at 33* which should make it much harder to crank then most.

Another friend of mine runs a motorcycle battery.

The nice thing about a dry cell like a dynabat is that you can mount it pretty much anywhere, in any position, I’ve seen a car with the battery suspended on it’s side strapped to the bottom side of the battery tray inside the fender (to make room for a bigger filter for a blown engine…

Is your brother battery strong enough to crank an 11:1 350?

I will have the ingnition on a seperate switch from the starter so I can get in rollling before I pop the fire to it.

I am most worried about the relaibility. I would hate to loose a re due to battery voltage drop.

This is what I was looking at:

http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680mjt.htm

I'm curious if anyone else has tried one. I understand you won't have the reserve like a regular battery, but I would think it would have enough a$$ to start my car on a regular basis without needing a jump, etc.

FYI, the Odyssey battery can be found at your local Harley shop. They use basically the same battery on new Sportsters. Save some shipping.
