steering problem?

ok problem #2 thats been driving me nuts all week --
the car has been making a nice groaning noise when your not moving and turning the wheel, it actually sounds like the tires are making the noise, its definately rubber...
everything is all greased up in front

ok the actual problem
i only notice the problem at higher speeds, but when im on the highway and turning into a bend, everything will be nice and easy.. but then the slightest touch will send it diving for the barrier.. its incredibly touchy but only under certain circumstances like that
im constantly correcting the steering it seems like, but if i let go of the wheel, it gos straight.. but it feels funny, like it wants to go somewhere else...
im guessing the alignment is off for some reason??
I think this hot weather we've been having all week took its toll on my car somehow, its really been no fun to drive lately :P

front tires worn ? if its following the grooves in the road check tire pressure and wear... you didnt say if this happens at safe speeds (within the speed recommended by high way department )or if its at race type speed. i suspect front tire wear is the problem...tao

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!
Engine: 5.0, Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel
Transmission: THM350 ??
Check the flexible coupling on the steering column near the steering box. If that's shot then it gives problems (mine did!). Check that the steering box isn't flexing the frame it's bolted too (good old stress cracks).
Check bushings, ball joints and alignment.
Phew!

Mark.

the steering box is good, and that coupler is good, as far as i know.. theres really no play in the wheel
checked my tire pressure, 32 front, 30 rear.. it always has followed the grooves in the road, heh
ive never gotten any abnormal tire wire and ive drove the hell out of it, this problem is relatively new so I havent noticed any abnormal tire wear yet either
and yes at normal speeds, 65ish
ill have to wait on the alignment, it was perfect.. i guess it couldve got knocked around somehow, dont remember hitting anything bad, heh.. oh well

try checking

your wheel bearings and ball joints. In a straight path the car drives fine, but as soon as the wheel turns you get a super sensitive response, I am almost it's gonna be the wheel bearings. Have you ever taken your bicycle wheel hubs apart? If you were like me and lost a couple of ball bearings, there was a lot of wobble after assembly. Same thing with our cars except we have bigger wheels which help compensate for the instability.
