Difficulty of removing the PS pump?
I just ordered a re-man power steering pump and new pulley for a 1989 Iroc-Z with the 5.7 engine. I plan on installing it next weekend. According to the Haynes manual, all that needs to be done is to remove the hoses, remove the belt, unscrew the pump mounting bolts & braces and remove the pump. Seems easy enough, but after doing a search here, I see that some people remove the pulley while the pump is STILL installed, am I missing something here?? With a new pulley, I do not need to remove the pulley, correct?

You have to use a power steering pump pulley puller and pull the old pulley off the old pump to be able to reach the bolts that hold the pump on. You can reuse the old pulley there is no reason to buy a new one. Then once the new pump is installed you need to use a power steering pump pulley install tool to install the pulley. Most of these tools are a puller and installer in one.
Auto Zone lending tools for free?
Will Auto Zone lend me their pulley puller/installer, if I didn't buy the pump from them or is their "free loaner tools" for people who purchased the parts from them only?

see, you go in and pay $50 on this $25 tool.... you bring it back, and they give you your $50 back.
you dont, and you just paid $50 for a $25 tool.... they dont lose either way. its great for us, and its great for them to get people in the store.
but you do have to have the cash to barrow it.
$20 and you own your own tool. I have one of these from Harbor Freight and it works great for the job. Not the most professional quality tool for everyday shop use but great and reasonable for the maybe 2-20 times you may do it in your lifetime in your own garage.
It is very easy to remove and replace the pulley off the pump with this puller kit- you'll be amazed how simple and quick it is to do that job.
