depends on what we're talking about exactly. if your taking about a 15x9, you can put something along the lines of a 28x12.5(roughly a 325/50/15) and make it tuck under the car with some inner fender "massaging" and rolling the fender lip, but with say like a 17x9, your not going to get much more than a 275/40/17 on it because of the way the sidewall is and so there isn't as much give like in the big sidewall tires.

there are some 03 cobra guys running 315s on a 17x9 wheel but i DO NOT reccomend it. mostly because its a waste of money. a 315 on a 9 inch wheel actually has LESS contact patch than a 275 does.

The shape of the tire. 275s are going to have straight walls and a nice flat patch. 315s will bubble out cuz they are wider than the rim is recomended for. So the bubble will loose contact. Stick with what you got unless you get wider rims.
Just as a testimony, I have 11" rims and 335s I am going to lower it down to 315s. The tire looks healthy and planted when it is the right size. The 335s bubble out more than I would like.
