Tow hoops front/back
My local racing circuit has brought in a requirement that cars have a tow hook front and rear for track-days. Has anyone fitted a hook to one of these cars? Did they have anything as an option etc?
Whenever I've been towed I just hook a rope round the swaybar, but these guys need a proper tow hook to pull the car out of gravel traps/tyre walls etc.
I was thinking of welding something to the chassis bar that runs across just behind the front plastic work. Haven't a clue how to do the rear though. Any suggestions/pics of what anyone else has done would be really helpful.
Ta,
Si.

for the front, i would put a standard racing tow hookup loop just off center, in one of the openings in the front.. have it attach to the "frame" where the front bumper bolts to..
you can do the same for the rear.. matter of fact, thats where some trailer hitches attach to the camaro.

I like the style of blyth18md's solution. I would like to retain the front fog lights as this is a street car mainly. Will need to take a look to see how feasible that is. Might have to make it something I switch out a fog light to get the tow hook in place for a track day.
Not sure exactly how to acheive the same at the rear. Does anyone have pictures of a rear solution?
Thanks,
Si.

I have to do this for my 89 IROC as well. Good thing my local track dosnt require it yet, but the mainland tracks I want to take the car to do require it. I'm planning on getting it done when I do my GFX swap after my next crash. Interesting to see how others have done it.

My current thoughts on this, is to use a 3mm thick plate of aluminium projecting forwards underneath the fog light, in an eyelet shape. And attach the car end onto the folded steel bumper piece with some square section spacing it up.
Not sure if that made sense, and haven't tried it yet.

Aye, was going to make summut like that.
I think the lip of the metalwork on the car means you have to space it up and away with something like square box section.

I was going to suggest that the s10 4x4 have hooks that mount to the frame. But I see someone has that already.
Good idea since mine seems to see a flat bed alot

Not to be mean or anything, but, he posted that up on here in OCTOBER 2005; the better part of 15 yrs ago.
Whether he ever comes here any more, or whether whatever he bought back then is still available, or if he even remembers, … we call this "necropsy" when you bring a zombie thread back to life this way.
Apart from that, there are ANY NUMBER of vehicles that have loops and hooks and whatnot, that their factories use to hold the cars still on rail cars and trucks and ships and such, during shipment, that you can gank for all but FREE. I have no doubt whatsoever that you can go to the junkyard and find something that will bolt right up to the "frame" of these cars with nothing more complicated than a hand drill. Look particularly at cars that are built across some wide ocean from the US. Europe, Japan, Korea, and so forth.

There is a group on Facebook for road racing / autocross / drift thirdgens. One of the members sells front hooks that bolt to the frame (not the crush bar) and stick out the foglight opening on Camaros. There are lots of ways to attach a rear strap to a frame rail. Firebirds are a different challenge for the front strap.
