Steering Box/ Frame Break

I think my frame under the steering box broke. I need to know how to check to be sure and what to do to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!

OK, here's my 2 pence.

With the engine running so's you've got power steering (it's easier), and the car stationary, gently turn the steering wheel. If the frame's cracked then you should see the steering box rock on its mounting points, flexing the frame one way or the other. You could try looking under the car (engine off, on jacks/stands) to see if you can spot any cracks, but to get the box to flex you'd need weight on the roadwheel to exert resistance on the steering.

To fix it you'd need to unbolt the steering box and weld a bit of steel plate over the cracks in the frame in addition to welding the cracks themselves. I say cracks, plural because my T/A had two cracks! You may need to get a shop to do this for you because of your vehicle laws over there (even if you have the skills yourself).

The next purchase after fixing the frame, assuming you don't already have one on the car, is a steering brace AKA Wonderbar. TDS do an excellent item.

Hope this helps..

Mark.

Thanks. That helps. I tried looking from the top already, but didn't really know what to look for. I have a spot where I can get my head under the car to take a peak. I already have a Spohn wonder bar and I like it. Thanks again, Aaron.
