Well I am having a lot of problems with rubbing and hitting with my 17x9" zr1's and 275 nittos, so I was concidering getting 2 16x8" zr1's and put some 235/245 tires up front and calling it a day. Anyone have any opinions on how it would look? Would it make that big of a difference looks wise? Anyone do this and have pics? Thanks for the help.

what size spacers are you doing? and is your car lowered? you need 2" spacers if you dont have them already

 

I think it would terrible honestly. Staggered setups don't look too good on these cars at all. What you have now looks great. Not too sure why you would want to go to a 16? Wheel diameter doesn't make a difference, if you choose the right sized tire you won't go over stock tire diameter anyway.

Ideally you should be running a 275/40. If your running a 275/45, your an inch over stock diameter and this will cause your rubbing issues.

Im not sure what the diameter is actually...im going to run out and check in a minute. I figured that I could fit a 245 or smaller on an 8" wide rim and it would solve all my rubbing issues. I also have an aftermarket rack&pinion and it has trouble turning those big 275 nittos at low speeds. I believe that not only am I having rubbing but i think they are making me loose some of my turning radius. I like the way it looks now, but if its going hurt its drivability I want to make a change.

Don't they make a 17 x 8 fourth gen style ZR1 wheel? I thought they did but could be wrong.

 

I havent seen any...if they did that would be great, Ill have to look into it though.

 

Well I ran out and checked and they are indeed 275/40/17. Would going to a 275/35/17 do the trick? Although I would imagine that would be a rather low profile tire.

And to answer BlueZee's question, I am using 2" spacer...might be 2 1/8" spacer. The car was lowered 1" with a prokit before, but I am in the process of getting some custom springs from ground control that will raise the car back right around stock height(or maybe slightly lower) with a lower spring rate for a more street/strip oriented suspension.

 

Well I found out what your talking about, with the 4th Gen style ZR1's 17x8 and they are actually made to fit a 3rd gen. However I believe they have a deeper lip to them. I dont know how that would look with no lip in the back and a deeper lip in the front...isnt it supposed to be the other way around? Here are a pic of the deep dished ones. They also dont sell them in chrome, or individually, so I dont think I could go this route, although it would be nice.

 

No I was thinking there were fourth gen offset wheels in 8". You wouldn't want to run those it due to lip, finish, and center cap differences. There are plenty of guys running 275 in the front so I would do as much research as you can before making a decision. One thing's for sure, that's a really sweet car I would hate to see you settle for 16's in the front. Then of course there is always the option of selling your wheels and looking into a different design, maybe even a custom built to your specs billet wheel.

 

Haha...I couldnt imagine what a custom wheel would cost...not in the budget of a 19 year old college student, ill tell you that lol. I tried to use a heat gun to bend the inner fender plastic, but that didnt turn out well so I decided not to make any more of a mess with that. I was also going to clearance the metal part of the inner fender but I didnt realize that it was so hard and a hammer wasnt going to do the job. Im not sure what to do now actually.

Used parts my friend, lol. I make decent money for my age, but pretty much all of it goes to the car anyway. My parents did help me some when I started the project 2 summers ago, but its pretty much on my terms now. I did make a couple posts about my rubbing issues, but I didnt get much feedback. The first thread i got the suggestion to use a heat gun, but it didnt work, the second thread no response.

Well that interesting because I didnt know they came in chrome, but still with the deeper dish/different center caps, and the fact they dont sell individually is kinda killing that idea unfortunatly.

....and I thought diameter eventually plays in a role.....the fact that on my 18x10's I was told to run a 35 series tire, but if it were my fronts which are 8", I can run a 45 series, and if Im right, they will be the same height?.....I never understood that...am I way off track on this, and someone could clarify this for me?

 

just throw on some 255/40/17s on the front or 245/45/17 and don't worry about it anymore.
I have had 255/40s and I have some 255/45/17s on my 17x9s right now, the only time I rub is when backing up full lock.

P.S. I have sportlines too.

 

Do 245 or 255fit that well? I thought that 245's did not fit well on the rim. I maybe wrong though.

 

check out my cardomain page, I had the 255/40/17s on the TT2s and the 255/45/17s on the RTs. I don't recoment the 255/45 combo, it is alittle too tall, should have stuck with 255/40 or 245/45. The later is what the size the 00ish mustangsGTs come with.

 

They look like they fit fine to me...I might have to go that route. Very nice cars by the way. I was looking into getting 2nd third gen for daily driving.

 

I just noticed though Camaro05 that you have 17x8" rims, and I have I believe 17x9" (possibly even 17x9.5")...so will a 255/40 fit on that wide of a rim?

*Edit: I just found out that a 255 will fit on a 9 or 9.5" wide rim so Im good on that route.

The only thing Im concerned with is if by going from a 275 to a 255 will actually fix the probelm. Its a relativly inexpensive route so I might try it.

Well it is I believe a 2" spacer...it might actually be 2 1/8" spacer. I also have a small extra spacer (maybe 1/8"). I am going to go measure them right now and Ill post it when I get it.

I also have not gotten the car aligned yet, and the camber is clearly too negative...if it was corrected to 0* would it make any improvement? Although its hard to say now because I have new springs coming.

 

Well I went out and measured and it turns out to be a 2" spacer with another small 1/8" spacer for a total of 2 1/8". Could it be pushed more and would that help my rubbing problem?

 

do you still have the stock k-member in there? i was lookin at some pics and it doesnt look like your front wheel is centered in the well, it looks too far towards the door.. i think you were using the hawk tubular stuff if that would throw it off that much, could also be the tires at a slight angle.. not sure :|

 

I am actualy running the 255/45 on my 17x9 RT rims, so a 255/40 is slightly wider and has a lower profile and should work verry well.

 

I think in that pic the wheel was turned a little. I am using hawks tubular k-member and spohn tub. a-arms, but the wheel is pretty centered I think.

I think I am going to try and pic up some relatively cheap 255/40 and see how they work. Thanks for the help. Anyone know about camber affecting tire rub?

 

I know your setup is much different and I'm not sure exactly where yours rubs. I put 255/50/16 on the front of mine and I had more rubbing with the "front" wheels. So, I switched to the "rear" wheels and had less rubbing. I had them spaced out too much, but I don't think that's your problem.

 

I'm guessing your rub issue is at full trurn, and between the outside edge of the tire and the back of the fenderwell by the door? - yes, caster/camber will effect it. Get it aligned. Also, if you can get by w/ a little less spacer, that can help. drop the 1/8 out(if it doesn't put the tire/wheel into the strut) and see if it helps.

 

Yes, the rubbing is at full lock, however I think it may also be hurting my turning radius. I used to not have the spacer, and when I did put on the spacer, the rubbing seemed to get better. However I think that caster/camber adjustment should help.

 

I just got the SLP ZR1 styles (17x8) with 275/50 back and 275/40 front. I had minor rubbing on the back (had to roll up the lip on the wheelwell) and the fronts fit with minor rubbing at full lock in reverse or over bumps when suspension compressed. Otherwise, for all the people asking if the 255s will fit on a 8'' or 9'' wide wheel, I have 275s on my 8'' wide wheel. Just an FYI... and the 275 look wicked on 3rd gens....
