tire clearance

I want to put 275/35/18 on the rear... the tires im dead set on the widest they come in 17 is 255 and 16 is 225... so im kind of stuck with 18" rims though if needed i can live with 255/40/17 ... i found .5" wheel spacers for cheap but will they fit on the rear? please help
