steering poping

i have a 1992 rs v6. when the car is on the ground turn the wheel all the way to the left it makes a poping noise close to the stopping point. for me to get it to do it again i need to straighten it out move fwd or back just a little then turn it all the way over again. all ball joints are good and the inner/outter tie rods are tight. could this be a steering box going out.

thank you for the help

Matt

strut mounts or double check ball joints. maybe control arm bushings. check to make sure all 6 bolts holding the k member are still there and tight

Steering box frame rail crack?

I dunno my gf's car used to do it. This was also before we put all new tie rods/centerlink/idler arm/ and a iroc-z quick ratio steering box. Oh and also a TDS wonderbar...all that fixed the steering poping noises at full lock when parking and such that we used to hear.

Have the same thing goin on in my 87 TA. If you look at the pitman arm while someone turns the wheel..see if you have play in that. My problem is my steering box. Must be worn on the main shaft bearings or something. It pops back and forth pretty good. It sounded like something was catching on sheet metal and making a pop. When I saw everything was clear, I had someone yank the wheel and that main shaft from the box was really movin side to side.

This is a pretty old thread...so you probably have it sorted out by now, but I just figured Ide post some of my experience for the heck of it.

I have the same problem. I replaced the balljoints with Moog "the problem solver" balljoints last year and it cured the problem a bit, but it still pops a bit when I turn the wheels all the way right...
