~[( Camaro is a Rough Ride )]~

My dad recently bought a 1990 IROC Camaro. After fixing some minor things he is now trying to figure out a way to get the car to ride smoother. He doesn't need the car to be super fast around corners. The car rides really rough and most people that he asks say that is usually the case. If anyone has any suggestions for a smoother ride, the input would be appreciated. I'm posting this for him, as he doesn't know hwo to use the computer that well.

Umm. IROC = factory roadrace car. not meat to be smooth. if you wasnt a smooth ride swap the springs, shocks, swaybars for SC or RS ones, or the better solution would be to buy one of those and leave the iroc as it is and sell it to someone who can respect its intended use.

ouch....I love my car and it rides hard as hell. But you cant equate performance to a hard ride. There are lots of performance sports cars that have way better road feel and are not jaw shattering over changes in road surface.

The most important part of your suspension is springs and shocks. Dont know when the last time your 16 yr old car had a suspension makeover but you'd probably have a much better impression of your car after installing updated shock and springs, new bushings, endlinks, etc.

Two of the best things I did for the car (better than sfc's) were a strut tower brace (HUGE difference), and then updating the rear with boxed LCA's and tubular panhard rod (HUGE difference).

I have Koni reds and a BMR tq arm ready for install. Will let you know how they effected road handling.

Funny how everyone is different (a good thing probably). I love my IROC. The one time of the day you can be assured of seeing me smile is when I walk out of the plant and see my car sitting in the parking lot. Rough ride? Never noticed. Now my 82 Blazer with the lift kit, big tires, big gas shocks, etc., that was a rough ride. I'm so used to the IROC that my wife's S10 blazer seems to just bounce, sway, lean, wander, etc. to the point that I'm not real comfortable driving it. Drive it, enjoy how it handles, have fun cornering and stopping, and after awhile you won't notice anything funny till you ride in something else.

Tires are the quickest way to dramatically change the driving/ride characteristics of any car.

Get on tirerack.com and find some tires in your size (245/50-16, I guess)that promise a smooth quiet ride. T/A radials come to mind.

You won't have to de-value or screw up the looks of the car by jerking around with the suspension, and the car will be significantly smoother on the road.
