Loud series of knocking
At slow speeds and when i park my car im getting a loud series of knocking coming from the front end. Sitting still turning the wheel back and forth to full lock i get like 4 thunks right before its turned all the way to the right. It clunked when i got the car some when pulling into parking spaces but a complete front end rebuild made them all go away. I just recently about 3 months ago lowered the car added a wonderbar and new sway bar bushings in the front.
Ive watched the front end when someone turns the wheel and everything looks nice and tight, no play when i shake the wheels.
Stuff that hasnt been changed:
Front Strut Mounts
Front Struts
Balljoints
Front Control Arm Bushings
Original Steering box and rag joint
All those havent been touched.
Im sure the car needs struts but how bad can the struts really be in order to make really loud poping noises?
It sounds like its coming right from the middle of the steering column. I pulled the cover back and have watch all around there and there is no play or movement. It doesnt sound like its inside the steering box but it happens right where it mounts. No frame cracks whatsoever nothing is rusted.
I have been plannin on getting struts on the car but not for over another month.
Thanks in advance for the help.

have some one turn the wheel side to side while you watch the steering box. check and make there is zero movement of the box while the wheels are being turned.

Re: Loud series of knocking
I know what you mean Stevo, my car has about 136,000 miles and it makes the noises when I turn the wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right.
I want to autocross my car but this knocking sound is giving me second thoughts.

My bet: Balljoints (worn balljoints sound like hull of the submarine that cracks under the pressure, when you turn your steering wheel fully

Ball Joints or center link joints. Both made weird popping noises when they went bad. Get it looked at. I had a ball joint let go while I was driving slow and it made a hell of a mess. Took 2 hours to get it hooked up to one tow truck with a second truck to help. They even called a supervisor who showed up in a third truck on his day off. Wouldn't want it to happen on the expressway. Last edited by L69norm; Aug 30, 2007 at 09:54 PM.
