I just bought a set of brand new Kumho Ecsta 245/50r16 tires. Unmounted they looked fine and wide. But now that they are installed they look very skinny.
Do tires do that? Will they settle and widen as the weight and handling is put upon them?
It just seems weird. Tires that were on there were the same size and looked much wider. But I wasn't the one who installed them. I haven't bought a set of tires for a Trans Am in 7 years.

They won't widen, but the tread pattern will eventually get wider as the tire gets flatter.

Sorry, I meant tread pattern. Derrrrr.... I thought it would widen out. Also, I checked the psi on them and they were above 50psi. So I lowered them back down to 35. I like it there because all the bumps in the road rattle the car. But 35psi softens it up quite a bit.
Thanks guys.

What they said.
U take 3 different 245/50-16's from 3 different manufacturers and they will all have different widths and heights.
Its how it works
later

Hey Lawrence, I actually just started using those rubber arms you sold me months ago. I cut the tips off the arms and used a dremel to slice off 1" of rubber from the base of the tip to expose the bare metal. Soon I will cut open the wing and glue them in there and use some sort of bondo like stuff for rubber and hopefully it will hold.
Guys, I know about tire companies being different with sizes. I just wanted to know if the tread will widen with age. Question answered.
