I've got stock 15" wheels on now, and I want to put on a 16x8 wheel with a 6.125 backspace with a 245 tire on all 4. will this combp work. everything else is stock on the car at this time.

 

A 6.125 bs will not work. The tire will rub the inner wheel well. The most you can go with a 16" rim is 5.5". Even with this it won't look right as the wheels will sit too far inside the wheel well. Most people go with a 4" or 4.5" bs but this is personel choice.

 

Backspacing depends on the wheel width, not diameter. I believe the stock backspacing for an 8" wide wheel with 0mm offset is around 4.5" or close. I agree that a 8" wide wheel with 6.1" backspacing will probably not fit. Most likely you'd need an an adapter, but it would also depend on what offset the wheel has. The offset is included in the backspace measurement. The article you refer to also states this. I say the wheel would rub due to the combination of backspace and section width of the tire not the overall diameter. The article also states that the max bs should be 5.85" on the rear and 5" on the front. Remember these numbers are maximum and the wheel would still look "tucked" under to far.

 

Will a wheel with a 2.25 bs look ok on my car. it's a weld pro star 15x4 wheel.

 

Yes, simply because skinnies (4" rims) are.....well...........skinnies and supposed to tuck in the wheel well. I though you were asking originally about putting 16" rims on the car. I had 16" prostars on my car before and I like them. Just remember that they are a drag wheel and weld does not recommend these rims be driven on the street everyday.

 

I know that, when I'm doing the wheels and tires at the same time as a new engine. Then it won't be driven very much. mainly an occasional sunday cruise to the track, or a car cruise or two. plus many trips down the 1/4 mile.

 

If you're gonna street drive it at all, I highly recomend staying wider than a 4" wheel. Simply put, it won't corner at any type of speed, plus it's tough to find properly sized tires that are D.O.T. legal. Run a 5" or 6" with something like a 185/60 tire.

 

What I was trying to say is it might be worthwhile for him to also find out what offset those wheels have before spending money on anything. I understand the offset is included in the backspacing measurement, but this dosnt mean you should just ignore the offset. Especially when you are trying to buy wheels with somewhat odd specs that might be made for different model cars/trucks ...

There is no reason to argue why an 8" wide wheel with a 6.125" backspace would "rub" on a 3rd gen. The rim would contact something on the chassis/suspension before the hub mounting surface sits flush against the hub. Simply put, it wont even bolt on. It would be similar to trying to mount 4th gen "Salad Shooter" wheels onto your 3rd gen without using an adapter. The section width of the tire won't matter.
