u joint impacting body pan under high-g's

when i put the pedal all the way down, I heard and feel a thumping. An underside inpection yeilded the observance of fresh scrap marks in the body pan directly above the U-Joint... ugly. The thumping is worse during full throttle while turning. So, I've sworn-off smoking until this situation is remedied. All the underside components look good, u-joints/drive shaft is tight, tranny mount looks in good condition and is feels tight. I did also notice a shiny section on the drive shaft yoke, like it has recently extended. Trans Am, 1986, 305 tpi, 4 wheel disc brakes, auto...

is your TQ arm mount OK? is the arm even there? i can't see how the driveshaft could contact the car without being broken and not have the TQ arm broken or missing.

tranny mount looks in good condition

Replace it anyway. That's the only thing that can cause that.

xplane... torque arm is still there... seems in good condition. It seems like a bad idea to have the torque arm attachment point so near the u-joint... sofakingdom, thanks! what do you think about mounting the torque arm basically on top of the u-joint?

Well millions of these cars have gone hundreds of thousands of miles each, with it mounted just like that; so I doubt that has anything to do with your problem.

It needs a trans mount, no matter what it "looks" like. Just change it out. That's what it always is. Do a search on this forum for "clunk" and "accelerate" or any other combination of words like that, just see for yourself how redundant and repetitive this question really is. It fixes everybody else's cars, it'll fix yours too.

Dude, if you are like pulling over 0.5 g's then your rubber bushings are probably flexing under all that torque from your 305.
