do i need a new steering column?

i dunno what the previous owner did but i decided to install a Grant Steering Wheel. I went to take off the old steering wheel, i unscrewed the NUt in the middle and the steering wheel fell off as well as the lock plate and plastic horn assembly. when i went to put it all back together the nut stripped the first 3 threads so i cant even get the Grant steering wheel on now, and the the shaft has play i can move it up down left right about 2 inches.

am i fubar'd and should get a new steering column?
