Suspension From The Ground Up!

If I was to rebuild my suspesion from the ground up. What would be the first place to start? Shocks, struts, and etc. Also what are some of the more reliable performing suspension parts out there?

What better place to start searching than by inquiring your peers? You can learn far more from someones experiences than from reading a web page.

Re: Suspension From The Ground Up!

Weld-in sub frame connectors first. This is the foundation to build on and will make a noticeable difference. Then complete front end replacement of bushings, springs, struts, steering components(tie rods,Idler arm, etc.), and alignment. If you donot have sway bars, add them then. Also if you do not have, install a Wonderbar. Again, a part that gives a noticeable improvement. For the rear, sway bar and bushings, shocks, springs, aftermarket tubular panhard rod, aftermarket torque arm and solid lower control arms. As for brands, use Moog for the front steering parts. All the other stuff,UMI,BMR,Spohn,Bilstein,Koni, etc. As stated below, use the search. Plenty of good info.

Re: Suspension From The Ground Up!

Starting from the ground up huh? I would suggest doing this all at the same time if you could afford to not drive the car for a while. (My reasons being that I like to get a wheel alignment after any suspension mods) I personally would gather a list of all the suspension parts on a car. (www.rockauto.com)
Then I would do research using the SEARCH button here on TGO. You will see people talk about aftermarket components all the time such as Sub Frame connectors (SFCs), Lower control arms (LCAs), LCA relocation brackets (LCARBs), and Panhard bars (PHB.) Goin to coilovers all around will give you more then you could imagine in terms of handling but that is a very expensive mod. Aftermarket Torque arms are also very popular. Depending on how extreme you are going to build your car you might want to consider Tubular parts such as A Arms and the K Member (Not much weight loss but they do open up things a good amount) I would not go with ElCheapo parts at any point. I am a tech at a local shop and have seen people say "we just got new ____ (fillin the blank) last year" and they DO fail. I suggest going to MOOG on the front suspension parts.

I guess what I really want to say is that everything depends on what you want to do with your car. If you are building an autoX car it will be different then building a 1/4 mile car which would be different then building a circle track car which would be different then building a daily driver.

Oh yeah how could I forget... After you rebuild your whole suspension you wont get decent traction until you get GOOD tires!!!!!!

Hope that helps,
Dennis

EDIT: You could also just go to Spohns website or UMIs website (or any other i guess) and check out what they have to offer for suspension parts and chassis parts then research on each part. All in all have fun.
