Torque Arm?
Torque Arm?
So i'm looking at buying a set of torque arms for my car, but i wanted to know how good these SLP torque arms are. Are they a quality product. I know that the price is a bit up there, but im trying to go with an slp design.http://store.summitracing.com/partde...view=skuthanks for the help.

Re: Torque Arm?
don't buy a torque arm that still mounts to the tranny. get a spohn crossmember one or a bmr or umi etc etc. ANYTHING other than trans mount.

Re: Torque Arm?
i would also recommend a cross member mounter torque arm from UMI, Spohn or whomever you so desire.
I would think that the torque arm mount would break off the tail housing before the tail housing actually broke off.
and the slp torque arm cost more that the much stronger, better crossmember mounted ones anyway.

Re: Torque Arm?
I think xpndbl3 has been around here long enough that he's explained it enough times that he takes it for granted that people would know this, or do a search to find out why.
A stock L03 is basically never going to harm the tranny. I think he's thinking about higher HP applications.
Sheesh guys, lighten up! It's a hobby, not a job
It *can* (and does) put additional stress in the tranny tail. I doubt it'll tear the tailshaft off, but think about it this way, you stretch the metal that holds a bearing containing a shaft spinning rather fast, what's going to happen? Best case is you lose some HP to friction. Worst case is it binds in the bearing and heats up the shaft and distorts it. You could get a vibration, or bend/break the tailshaft.
Besides, a tranny mounted TA basically lets the TA front mount flex up a bit more. Ie it's more prone to bending up to a higher amount of TA angle, whereas a better supported front mount won't move as much. So if you have -2* angle on the TA, and have a flimsy front mount, a hard launch could bring you to +3*. If it's more rigid you might only go up 2* (to 0*), for example.
Theres lots of reasons for it, mostly it's to keep things separate. You don't want the TA to be able to effect the tranny.

Re: Torque Arm?
Hmmm, my car had the stock tq arm for over 17 YEARS without once ripping the tailshaft off the transmission. I did replace it with UMI's tunnel mounted tq arm a few months ago. But the reason why I posted my post was to indicate that telling someone to get something without a reason is not beneficial unless you tell them why.
I was just making a suggestion to make the boards more informative for everybody.

EDIT: one more thing, if you plan to go fast, do like xpndbl3 said.. NO trans mounted torque arms.. i have a trans mounted one and i'm gonna convert it to a crossmember.. you get way too much flex from the torque arm bushing and the trans bushing.. and i've heard that a trans mounted arm will only hold up to an 11.0 pass MAX with an auto.. slower for a manual..

Re: Torque Arm?
Think of it this way. For $425 shipped you can get a x mount spohn x member, driveshaft saftey loop, and adj tq arm that mounts to the x member or for $449 plus shipping you can get just a tq arm. Its not rocket science. stonger is always better and the x member mounting arm is safer, stronger and cheaper.
Re: Torque Arm?
do a search guys, there have been a few guys break the 700r4 tail housing.
I munched enough trans mounts in relatively stock form to see the comon sense involved in putting the tq arm on it's own crossmember.
I agree, that although SLP makes decent quality parts, much better suspension components can be had for less money from other sources.
