'88 GTA Torque Arm Noise

Am original owner of '88 GTA w/50k on it, only drive it a few weeks a year. Under hard acceleration the torque arm sounds like it is hitting the center hump under floor console between front seats. I have been hearing this noise in just the last 1K miles. I replaced front and rear springs with Rancho springs back in '90 to get the car to sit a little lower. Am sure original shocks are in dire need of replacement (struts too). Will rear shocks remedy this problem or will I need to replace the rubber piece at the tip of the torque arm also?

Not the problem. Its your Transmission Mount. This is a very common issue. The rubber mount, lots of torque and the torque arm pushing up all contribute to it breaking. Get a EnergySusp or ProThane poly mount to replace it. Yhey are $20-$30 bux. I had my orig break after buying my TA in 95. Thge replacement rubber ones went within a year. I had replaced it 2Xs with rubber. $15 a pop. Finally I put a poly mount in and it has lasted for the past 10 years (1997-2007). Best $20 I ever spent IMO

Thanks. Makes a lot of sense now that you have spelled it out.

Re: '88 GTA Torque Arm Noise

No problem. Just get under there and youll probably see it split and sagging. Good Luck
