Rear end question

Hey all.

I have a question regarding a rear end for my camaro, so I thought this would be the best place to ask.

I have a 1984 camaro z28, and I want to know if a 10 bolt 2.73 posi would fit in my car.

Thoughts?

Re: Rear end question

first off you have to make sure your rearend is a 10 bolt.duhh and second you have to make sure the axle splines are the same youll either have 26 or 28 spline axles, im not sure if it matters what series the carrier is (series two or three) i know if you install a series two carrier and you want to put a higher ratio like a 3.73 gear you have to get spacers to go behind the ring gear im just not sure if you can just install any series carrier in any rearend hope that helps you out a little

Re: Rear end question

From what I heard, the series two carrier is only good for gears up to 3.08 and the series three is good for 3.23 and up.

Re: Rear end question

Your car will have a 7.5" 10 bolt. A 7.5/7.625" posi will fit. There are also 8.2 and 8.5" 10 bolts and nothing is interchangeable between the 3 different 10 bolts.

If we knew exactly what engine you have and what transmission, we can tell you what gears were in your diff when it came from the factory.

Why would you want a posi with a 2.73 highway gear? A gov lock would do just as well and without a performance gear, you wouldn't hurt it.

Re: Rear end question

First, I think I should say that I pretty much know jack about cars.

Gear ratios and all those other numbers are beyond me at this moment. Trying to learn as I go. Ya dig?

Second, my camaro has an automatic trans. I'm building a bored 350 for it.

If you're talking about swapping the entire rear end into your car, yes, it's a bolt-in. You'll probably have to throw in a drive or driven gear to make the speedo read correctly. Then there's the master and prop valve to consider depending on whether the rear is drum or disc. A search will provide more info.
