edelbrock 5227 stb on '86 camaro

i've noticed that depending on who you listen to, the 5227 strut tower brace will fit either 1982-92 (jegs) or 1987-92 (edelbrock's site says '87).
were the strut towers changed in one of those years?
i vaguely remember something about this years ago on this forum, but couldn't find anything by searching.
i'm asking because i have an '86.
anyone know?

If you go onto the summit site, they have the Edlebrock instruction in PDF, in the instructions they stated fits 82 - 92

The STB won't fit carbed cars with the AC compressor on the driver's side (a brace interferes). IIRC, the compressor was swapped to the pass side in 87.
If you've removed the AC or swapped to a serpentine system the Edelbrock is a bolt-on as seen in my Car Details.

Re: edelbrock 5227 stb on older camaro

kind of figured it out,
the strut mount retainers are different on the '82-'86 and '87-'92 models. i don't remember if you have to drill to change to the new style retainers or not. most aftermarket strut towers and STB's are machined for the later pattern.
i know spohn stuff is, they sell the later retainers for 25 bucks a pair.
i'll try to find out if a new hole is required.

It does not make a difference, from the instruction, it does not bolt to the strut mount bolts, you drill holes in the tower and the bracket mounts next to the strut mount. The difference has been pointed out by JamesC above, it will not mount properly if the air conditioning pump is mounted on the drivers side, 87 and above were mounted on the passenger side

572 is correct: The strut mount retainer has nothing to do with--and no new hole is required to use them. Here's what I discovered long ago:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...elp-quick.html

Hit the JY and purchase the correct retainers for pennies.

thank's for setting me straight 572.
james, i was just about to link that very post to this one for future inquiries. you beat me to it!
thank's again for clearing that up. i had it set in my head that that the STB mounted on top of two of the strut tower retainer studs.
