Looking for a little more traction on the street.

Took out the car today for the first time with the 9" rear. Still blowing the tires off in third gear (th350).

List of suspension
stiffer springs
stock shocks
control arms, panhard, torque arm upgraded

tires are mt sportsman 29x12.5

Im only running 4 psi in my 383. I'm just blowing the damn tires off, want more traction!

Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe relocated carbs?

I also plan on upgrading to et streets in the near future as I'm not sure how these sportsmans will hook at the track.

Yeah I would say the LCA relocation brackets will help you hook but since your already spinning, it will probably just make it worse. I'm thinking the stiffer springs you installed aren't allowing enough weight transfer. Try softening the rear springs and using stickier/wider tires. Since you still have the stock shocks, switching to some adjustable rear shocks will help you fine tune the weight transfer which would increase traction.

I think weaker springs would help the initial launch, but if your already moving, stiffer get more weight to the ground.

The tires are as wide as I can fit without doing any tubbing. The tires are rather grippy, I wonder how much better et streets would be.

Re: Looking for a little more traction on the street.

The rear should lift on launch, so the springs are really a moot point, a good fresh set of stockers will do fine. Getting the tail of the control arms dropped will also work wonders for ya. A good set of 50/50 drag shocks out back and 90/10 struts with Moroso trick springs up front and no sway bar will go a long way toward helping you. What air pressure are you running in the sportsmans?? They will work best between 15-18psi much like a slick, the sidewall will not wrinkle properly above 20psi. I have seen tires toted on sportsmans on the street MANY times. The et streets are only a "street tire" by definition, really a drag slick with enough groove cut in it to make the feds happy. They are killer at the track and on the street for that matter but tend to blister badly if driven a lot.

Re: Looking for a little more traction on the street.

What do you mean by "tires toted on sportsmans"?

The air pressur is rather high, probably around 30. Whatever the mounting guy put in it. I have stiffer springs up front and adjustable shocks.

So LCARB huh. I kinda wanted to stay away from them for a little while. I figured without em, the front end would lift higher at the track.

I havent had the sportsmans on very long, but they're used. I'd like to keep em on for a little while longer, I hope they dont do terrible at the track.

Front tires off the ground.----Sorry, I guess being from PA you don't speak "Alabama R3dn3ck"---
The control arms act like lift bars when dropped in the rear, makes front come WAY up.

Lol. I didnt figure they'd get the traction to lift the front. Thats good news. They're almost bald. LCARBs actually help the front pick up? More good news.

What do you think I should do first, the lcarbs or street legal slicks?

Ok, I'm going to order the lcarbs.

brooks-did I read that right that you've seen the fronts lifted with sportsmans on the STREET?? Leaving foot wide streaks is nice, but that kind of traction would be fantastic.

Re: Looking for a little more traction on the street.

Got the LCARB's on, not much difference. I think I need to change tires, these sportsmans are old and hard. I'd like to go with a 28x12.5 but the radials are better on the street and at the end of the strip, but looks like the only tire I could fit is the 275, next up is the 325 (13.5) which has the same sidewall width (13.1) as my sportsmans (13.0). They are a little too wide for look's sake.

So I guess I'm stuck with the bias-ply? wtf.

LCARB's are an adjustment tool, not a one size fits all. What have you tried them with? (ie, which adjustment slot?)
Have you disconnected the front sway bar?
There's lots of drag racing tricks to get the car to hook up, read some posts over on the racing board.

Re: Looking for a little more traction on the street.

Im just trying to get more traction on the street. I have the control arms at the lowest. Spohn. Havent got it to the track yet, my buddy doesnt think I'd even get traction at the track with these old tires I have. As soon as I get 400 bucks ready to spend, I'll try new tires. After feeling some good soft tires, the ones I have are hard as hell. Who knows how old they are....

Hey I know you dn't want to but try putting 60 to 80lbs in the back of the car. It worked for me.

Re: Looking for a little more traction on the street.

Hmmmmm. No point in having a fast car if it doesnt go anywhere. I need to move the battery to the back, maybe some extra weight back there wouldnt be a bad idea. The car is gutted.

That's something I had completely blocked from my mind, but I suppose its not a bad idea if new tires don't work out.

Thanks TheBadazz.
