Steering Column Troubles
Well I pulled the wheel off and got to the locking mechanism, the steering shaft had a groove all the way around it like someone turned the wheel with it locked and stripped out the shaft, I took forever to get that out because there was a ring holding it in the groove, got that out and saw the bearing it had a little bit of movement in it. I found out why my horn didn't work( it was missing some contacts, so I got that figured out. The wheel would wiggle about a half in side to side and a 1/4 inch in and out before i took it apart, and I read somewhere that there is 4 bolts to make sure are tight, so I think I saw those bolts but didn't see any movement, it was getting late (past midnight) so I put it back together, Got the wheel on and notice it now moves 2 inches side to side and 1 1/2 in and out, WTF
, now i don't think it is even safe to drive the car, any suggestions as to what to do?
Sorry if this doesn't make since its late 2 am

Re: Steering Column Troubles
That channel around the shaft, in the middle of the splines is normal. It sounds like you moved the top bearing, it's easy to put back in place. Pull outwards on the steering shaft, while pushing in on the bearing retaining ring, the beveled ring that the spring sits on. You may have to wiggle it around a little, but it should pop back into place, and the slack in the shaft will go away. I did this a couple weeks ago when I had my column apart, and thought I broke it. Here's a quick drawing of how it should go together:
Note that I didn't include the turn signal switch, but it goes behind this assembly. It could still be a loose tilt mechanism too, if the bearing is indeed seated good.
