Torque arm removal question!
Hey guys,
Need to replace my clutch, just had a questions about the removal of my torque arm.
Now my haynes manual says I have to remove the coils in the rear end to prevent "rear axle forward twist." Is this necessary? I was talking to a guy who figured I should just leave em on. This would make it alot easier.
And regarding jack points...I know where to place a hydraulic jack to lift either the front or rear, but I really have no clue where to place the jack stands. I realize they are susposed to go on the rear axle if raising the rear, however, my car has a swaybar that prevents this. In addition, if I needed to remove the coils, I'd need to find a new place for the stands regardless, so I could drop the rear end.
Right now my car is just sitting on ramps/cinder blocks.
Where are the ideal points for the jack stands??
Thanks!

Re: Torque arm removal question!
for the rear, you can put the jack stands just ahead of where the lower control arms mount to the body, or on the "frame" part just inboard of that part.
removing the springs will probably make things a lot easier.

Thanks for the help!
I figured one of those frame sections was the right area, but when I knocked on it, it didn't sound very strong. Also, doesn't it have a bit of an angle to it (sloping backwards??).
What about the front?

I have used those areas on the rear before. On the front I put my stands under the A-arms where the spring buckets stick down.

Re: Torque arm removal question!
You don't HAVE to pull the rear springs. I never have, when doing a clutch.
The rear end will rotate, pinion up, and the torque arm will rest against the floor. Pull the tranny,do the clutch, them put it all back together. Pull the torque arm down, redo its mount. Done. No big deal.

Re: Torque arm removal question!
yeah, there's not as much pressure on the torque arm as you might think. i was led to believe that the thing would punch a hole in the floor if you let it go with the car jacked up, in reality there might be 10-15 lbs of force at the trans end (at least on my car with old rear springs). to be safe though, lay a thick towel or t-shirt over the top. at least you'll protect your undercoating.
