All the posts about the rear thud on takeoff!

This is one of the problems I first noticed after I bought my car. I typed in Thud in the search and read tons of threads where everyone asked about this problem. I read all the responses and today was going to tackel this problem. I bought a floor jack and stands and can now somewhat slither under the car.

After all the reading I did last night I thought I'd find the problem easily. WRONG.. I can't find anything broken or loose. None of the treads show any pictures of exzactly what to pry or poke at and most posters never followed up with what they found was the problem or any pictures of broken parts.

Is that huge long steel bar that runs parallel to the driveshaft suppost to be what is usually broken? Transmission mounts? Where exzactly are these? Where the transmission bolts to the engine? The only thing I found broken is one bolt pictured below. Is this my problem? That braket is rock solid even with the broken bolt. Can anyone post any pictures as to exzactly what could be the cause of this problem. Took me a long time to get the car all jacked up to where it is and don't want to take it down till I find what is broken. Thanks Mike

Do I dare start the car put it in drive and rev it? If I look underneath while someone does this willit be ovious what the problem is?

The single bolt in the center of the cross member holds the trans mount. Look directly above that bolt. In the pic the mount appears to be split.

Torque arm. It doesn't break, but its mount (its bracket is shown above) sometimes requires replacement. The OE mounts are rubber and eventually succumb to age.

I wouldn't recommend starting the car while it's on stands.

Thanks James, the bracket with the broken nut......I put a pry bar through the bracket and the transmission does move up and down.

Now to fix the problem...can I just remove the other 3 bolts and will this whole bracket just drop down? Is this whole bracket and what's broken above one piece? Or is the new piece I need to buy something seperate that just bolts to the braket in the picture using that center nut?

The cross member and tranny mount are separate pieces. Support the trans tail shaft, remove the center bolt, then drop the cross member (if need be. You may be able to raise the tail shaft far enough to remove the old mount without dropping the cross member). The mount itself has two bolts holding it to the trans.
