power steering pump or box?

somewhere in my steering system something is gone. when i turn full lock the engine drops like 700-ish rpms and the pump screams. and the steering feels chunky like a volume **** or something just not smooth lol. plus when i got the car the power steering pump was bone dry. and the hoses are leaking. so my questions are should i replace the pump or steering box? and will any of these parts come with new hoses?

Re: power steering pump or box?

I'd guess the pump is toast. A new one will not come with hoses, but they're probably around $20-$30 for each hose. The return hose may just be a standard rubber almost fuel line that should be $1.10/foot. I just put a pump on a van, and the directions say to pre-bleed the system before operation. My guess is this means the pump really doesn't like being dry, along with squealing is never good.

Re: power steering pump or box?

I'd recommend both. Although you may get by with just changing the pump, there's always a risk that metal from the failed pump got into the steering box. Over time, it will cause the steering box to fail if it hasn't already.

Re: power steering pump or box?

Some drag racers just take the pump and lines off. As long as you have the v-belts instead of a serpentine setup, and want a workout, you could probably do that to not have to buy anything.
