Install very tight to align the cotter pin hole. If hole doesn't line up, tighten a bit more.

ok thank you. but according to the haynes manual i need to torque them. i just dont want to damage them by tightening too tight. Of course im not gonna put brute force on them but i just want to make sure im doing this right the first time. I appreciate your time. any more feed back is welcome.

i wrench for a living and its like he said tight works
if you cant get the cotter pin in make it tighter
if it makes you feel more comfortable i usually tighten them down with an impact but do as you feel

I use the box end of a wrench and usually snipe it with another wrench to pull it tight. I'll use an impact if I have room but not very often on automotive parts. Changing a tie rod on a truck I need a 15/16" socket and sometimes need a 3/4" impact to get the old ones off.
If you have a repair manual, there should be a torque spec in it but I've never torqued ball joints, tie rod ends or anything else like that. They're all a tapered pin fit so it can only be tightened so far.
