When does the TQ arm need to come of the transmission?
the title pretty much says it, at what point/power level does it become necessary to move the TQ arm mount from the tail shaft to the x-member? keep in mind this is a t56 application. Thanks!

Re: When does the TQ arm need to come of the transmission?
I don't think it's related to the power output, but more of an adjustability issue. All the kits I've seen that move it to the x-member use either a rod end, or a round bushing which doesn't bind at all through the full range of motion. The stock mount basically binds by design, but the movement is so small, it's not really an issue. Also, as the stock bushing wears, it could cause the pinion angle to change slightly - using an arm mounted firmly to the x-member would also eliminate this.

Re: When does the TQ arm need to come of the transmission?
i understand the advantages of tuning with it mounted on the cross member, mine is a spohn unit mounted to the x-member but im getting a double hump cross member for exhuast clearance so a trans mounted tq arm would make my life easyer. i've also heard stories of the tailhousing of the transmission breaking, so at what power level is the transmission going to break at? 400hp? 600? 1000? t56 btw
edit: i know there is no set level, but a ballpark would be good

Hello
There is no set HP limit on when to get the Torque Arm off the rear of the transmission! We usually recommend when you have the chance do it! It will save you money and grief in the long run when you decide to build a lot of power. Saving you money on the rear of the transmission when the tail shaft breaks. So you can take it on a personal preference. That's just my advise.
If you have any other questions leave me know and I will be glad to help!
Thanks
Brad

I agree. Do it when you can. Personally...I hate the idea that part of my suspension was attached to my trans. I never understood that. I mean...I understand...but I just dont like it.
I went with a crossmember mount when I did my swap and never looked back. I hated dealing with that stupid clamshell mount too. PITA.
As for power level... Ive seen them break with LS1 swaps that have some work done. Maybe in the 450 hp level? But who knows what actual circumstances lead to it busting.

i had a friend that had a 01 formula with about 400 flywheel hp. he broke 3 tail shafts on a automatic at that. so, your basically playing with fire if you increase your hp/tq output and don't change it, in my opinion.
