manual steering owners inside
im gonna have to run a manual box from a g body or a s10 i hear fits, due to my turbo setup i have to get rid of the pump for now....so anyone here that has one....what did you have to change, just the box and the steering shaft also....direct bolt in .....and finally....how hard is it to drive...big differance....or not really.....i do have 245 tires in the front of the car....
any help with this would be great....thanx guys

Using a 84+ S10 box is a direct swap. Remove power steering box and related hydraulic parts. Install S10 box. It's recommended that you swap over the third gen pitman arm onto the S10 box. It's slightly longer than the S10 pitman arm and will keep the same steering geometry.
Look for an S10 manual box with the 4 bolt top cover. The 3 bolt top cover is the older version and isn't as easy to swap in because of the different shaft sizes.
Manual steering boxes can only be found in S10's that came with the 2.5L 4 cylinder engine but not all 2.5L S10's have manual steering.

That is a rather general question, there is allot to be considered... Ratio of the box, size and width of the tires, size of the steering wheel, ride height, stiffness of springs, pitman arm ratio, modified or stock spindles... The list goes on, my point here is that you cant use someone else experience as a point of reference for yourself, your friend could say "I have 13" tires up front and its a piece of cake" then your 160LB self can seem to parallel park with 9" tires while pulling up next your 260lb gorilla friend.
You can make a manual box go lock to lock it one turn and be extremely sensitive but its going to be nearly impossible to turn under 25mph...

I have the stock IROC wheels and tires up front 245/50/16 with the mannual s10 4bolt box talked about above post . the front suspention on my car is no sway bar , 70/30 struts . It is not that bad to steer when moving , from a stop , parking etc it can be alittle bit of a pain but not to where I whould take it out and go back to p/s . I'm about 150 lbs just my opinion .

Well I don't know how much help I can be but I just got my manual box in and it's really not that bad turning the wheel from a stop, but my car is grossly lightened. So turning effort is great reduced. I have 245-50-16's on GTA wheels. From just regular driving steering effort isn't much different than stock, just alittle tighter.

there is alot of flex on the frame mount of the box and this doesnt help steering
imo id only put one in a drag car

im running a manual box in my 86 monte, with a blown 489 stroker. easy to turn and tok 15 minutes to put in.
