Strut top removal - treating surface rust

Hey All - new here but a somewhat avid 3rd gen fan.

Anyway, I've recently acquired a 1990 GTA which has some surface rust on the drivers front suspension turret where the strut top thing bolts on. My question is, is there a rather uninvolved way to remove this so I can treat this rust - I'm logically thinking that most of the weight should be on the spring so could I unbolt the strut top with car perhaps slightly raised from the ground (jack on chassis) to relieving some weight from the suspension).

Hoping there is an easy way rather than removing the suspension strut but if it needs to be, then so be it!

Cheers guys - Great site btw - will put a few pics of the car in the members gallery

Yes, you can remove the strut mount without removing the strut from the spindle. I've replaced them before by leaving the wheel on without jacking. As long as it's resting on the suspension and the spring is compressed like normal, the only pressure on the strut mount is from the strut itself. You'll just have to compress the strut by hand to re-install, unless it's flat worn out. Mark position of the strut mount so it can be re-installed properly.
