i just bought some bfg tires and cragar rims. they stick out the sides a bit and when i hit bumps in the road or dips they rub. i need some advice on what to do. i think rolling the fender lip might help but i dont think it will stop the problem because it would still hit there. i did my share of searching on this topic and couldnt find much. the rear rims are 15x8 bs 3.5 i think and the tires are bfg radial t/a P275/60R15.

 

You shold have got 4.5-5.5 backspacing. the 3.5 aint gonna fly.

 

Do both sides stick out the same? Or just that 1 side? Is your car lowered any?

I had 285/17s on 5" bs wheels on (at stock height) and never rubbed once. But if the rear end is off to one side, you might need a new PHB, maybe just new bushings in the one you have.

 

the problem is the backspacing, you need at least 4.5" of bs in a 8" rim for it to fit properly on a 3rd gen.

You can roll the fenders, but that wont solve your problems.

Or you can swap in stronger rear springs, raising the rear a little and keep the car from hitting the tire. Moog Iroc replacements would probably do the trick.

 

I had the same proem on my 84 Z28 with drag radials. Try the wheel spacers, they gave me that extra 1/4 inch that i needed

 

spacers will make his problem worse

 

does anyone think dragbags or coil spacers/ shims will help any.. i really dont want to buy new rims.. i know i should have gone with more backspacing but its too late for that now unless some one wants to buy the rims for 150 a piece.. they have like 5 miles on them haha

 

they wouold both help, the drag bags would be better, but they are both still bandaids. New IROC springs for the rear are not that expensive and will most likely solve this issue

What about the tire size itself? i just purchased cragar rims 15x8 with 3.75 B.S and the tire saize is only 215 65r i think, will i have these fittin issues also?? even with smaller tires???

 

Actually, My tire size is 255/60R15. Rims are 15 x 8 Backspacing 3.750 in. -19.00mm Offset. Will I have fitting issues with these or am I ok to roll with it? They have not been mounted just yet so I can send them back if need be.

 

you should have 4.5" of bs. those will stick out and you can run on the quarters if the car is low enough, or over bumps. that offset if for earlier f-body cars, 1st and 2nd gens

if its a 15x8, you need 4.5" of backspacing, or a zero offset. If the wheel is wider, the offset wont be zero. you could get away with a little more on the rear to tuck the wheel more. The factory 16x8's have a little over 5" of backspacing in the rear.

 

OK so i read that the factory offset for the 82-92 thirdgen was a 0 offset, in order to prevent stress on bearins and handling problems, i would nee to stick at 0 or as close to 0 as poissible and a -19 woulnt work. correct?

 

the factory 15x7's i believe were all zero offset. the 16x8's had a zero offset in the front and a -16 in the rear. The rears will not fit on the front, they will hit the tie rods with a wheel smaller that 18", so a -19 will not work on the front at all. they should work on the rear.

it would be easier to just get zero offset wheels, 15x8, if heats the size you are looking for, on all 4 corners. that way you can rotate wheels and tires when needed.

 

haha this is such an old post but i ended up just stickin drag bags in the rear springs and it works great. 90 bucks and easy install.

 

Apparently your rubbing was just the tread hitting the bottoms of the fenders lips which means 2 things....Tires too tall or springs/shocks too soft. In those cases, drag bags are "cheap" band aides to stop the rubbing. I wouldn't exactly call $90 cheap though.

 

yea i guess not exactly cheep but better than loosing 200 or more, selling the tires and another 200-400 stuck with it buyin new tires and rims

 

Haha new post to me though, I just sent the new cragar trick 1 back in exchange for the factory spec cragar soft 8's, i acutally get 80.00 back in which ill just use to throw in for some new shocks and S*** any ways
