installing an 8 pt roll cage have a question about halo height

As the title states I'm in the middle of installing a 8 pt roll cage on my 91 Z28. the car is in the middle of a complete restomod. I currently have no interior in it and need to know how high to set the main halo. I'm installing it where most people do on the hump where the rear seats would normally rest, just behind the door line. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post. What I need to know is how high should the halo be relative to the mounting point on the floor to leave me enough room to install the headliner. I have an S&W cage and have to trim the halo to the correct height. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're describing the main hoop.... It should be as high as possible in the car...If you're putting a headliner back in it, then as tight to the headliner as you can. Best to tack the main hoop in place, fit the rear bars and tack them then cut the tacks out of the main hoop so you can wiggle the main hoop around in the car to make room for good welding. A bit of advance planning is important for a proper cage or roll bar installation...

When you're trimming the main hoop for height, cut a little off at a time. It's easy to trim off a little more if required. It's hard to add back on if it's cut too short.

A halo bar is the bar that goes around the perimeter of the roof line and is supported at the front by the a-pillar tubes. This makes a full cage. It sound like you're just installing a roll bar, not a cage.

Mine was easy. I have zero interior. I positioned the main hoop as high as it could possibly go.

Re: installing an 8 pt roll cage have a question about halo height

Ok thanks for the correction on the term. I actually have a full 10 pt kit, but I'm only doing an 8 pt install since it's a street car and I don't want to cut up the dash. Radical that's exactly how I plan to do it. I'm building the car at a friend of mine's shop and he has plenty of experience welding and build cages so that stuff I'm not worried about. However I still need to know how high to set the roll bar and I don't have a headliner for the car right now, since I won't be installing the interior for a while. So does anybody have a hardtop with the interior in it and a roll cage???

Re: installing an 8 pt roll cage have a question about halo height

Your 8 point roll bar made from a 10 point cage kit will not be dragstrip legal. Without the halo bar and a-pillar tubes, the remaining tubes will be too small. A full cage uses 1-5/8" tubing. A simple roll bar uses 1-3/4" tubing.

If you never plan on going to the dragstrip then you're just adding a lot of unnecessary weight to the car, impossible access to the back seats, difficult access in and out of the car, etc.

Re: installing an 8 pt roll cage have a question about halo height

not really worried about the track. The tech inspectors at the ones I go to just check to see if the battery is held down. I don't have time right now to install the rest of the 10 pt kit, because the car has to be done and moving under it's own power by May. So I don't have the extra time to modify the dash and install the halo right now. Either way the car is getting an NA 408 so the 8 pt installed will definetly stiffen the chassis not just add weight. Also I already cut out the rear seat brackets, so I'm not too worried about that.
