Clover leaf lug nut


Anyone know where I can get the socket to fit the old clover leaf lock nut on some wheel lugs? I just got an '84 Z28 and I can't get the wheels off.

The 'clover leaf' locking lug nut requires a specific key--the 'clover leaf' varies in size and shape. The best method I've used is a 12 point socket that fits really tight on the outside of the locking lugnut. Hammer it on and try to remove it. If it's rusted tight, this method may not work.

Give AW Direct a call at 800 243-3194. They produce a myriad of different tools to remove locking lug nuts. They have specialized application-specific tools to remove the nut without damaging the wheel. Might as well do it right.

Those tools your talking about work the same way. They look like a socket with no 'teeth' inside. They fit tight over the lugnut so it can be removed and very rarely do they work. How exactly is the socket going to hurt the wheel? If the socket doesn't work, it would be cheaper to take it to a shop than to buy the 'right' tools and try to do it yourself.

There's something else to try...

Crank the other 4 lugs on as tight as you can. Then take a big pair of channel lock pliers, or vise grips, to the stuck nut. With some luck, you'll be able to spin it.

This is how I got my locking nut off after the blippin' key stripped on me when I tried to change a flat in the middle of nowhere. Never buy Rally's locking lug nuts!! Want to guess at how far I threw that sucker into the woods? Hehehe...

Oh I there's the danger of cracking an aluminum rim if the lugs are too tight, but I think that's just if they're overtorqued for a long time. Anyone?

I misplaced my key to the locking lug nuts and had to get one off in an emergency. I tried the vise grip method without success. The best way to do it is to have weld a standard lug nut on top of that one, then remove that one and the stuck one all at the same time. Be sure to put a piece of metal beside it as a shield so you don't damage the rim. Good luck, Lon. (Oh, I found my key later that day, Grrr).
