Eliminate Power Steering?

Thinking out loud....

Many years ago my college roomate had a 1980 Chevy Monza (remember those things?) and he extracted all the fluid out of his resevoir and put a 8" steering wheel on the car. It was very difficult to steer, but he loved it that way.

I'm now installing headers on my car and am considering removing the PS pump from the car and then block off the two lines.

Has anyone here done that? Results?

Also, will this action destroy my PS unit?

Thanks!!!

Just swap in a manual steering box from an S-10 pickup rather than try to run the power unit without any fluid...that can't be good for it...

Any year S-10 should work, although the ratio will be mush slower. This shouldn't be a concern if you are drag racing the vehicle. The S-10 box will be easier to steer than the stock box without power steering fluid, and it also is much lighter.

Look for a 84-87 s-10 or s-15, two wheel drive,4 cyl truck. This will be your best bet to find one. I paid $60 mach for the 2 I bought. If you drag race much it will save you 20 lbs off the nose. Your steering will be harder, at slow speeds but on the highway you wont know the differance.
