what do i look for when looking for rear disc swap? please help

i want a rear disc setup for my car really bad, but i odnt know exactly what i am looking for. i want a "newer" version of the 10-bolt. with the 7 5/8" gear and 28 spline axles if possible. what codes, etc should i look for?

what year should i look for?

i dont really know a whole hell of a lot of specifics about rear ends so any help would be greatly appreciated.

the gears don't matter because i plan on getting it rebuilt before it goes on the car anyways.

thanks a lot.

If gears don't matter just get a rear out of any 90 and newer car or it may be 89, I know 89 was the year for the pbr calipers (what you want) it my also be the year for the better axels. This probably did not help much.

The newer version disc rear has finned aluminum calipers and 12" rotors. Just bring a magnet with you, and don't believe everything anybody at a junkyard tells you. I had quite a few people tell me they had the new rear, but when I went there, the rears had the older iron calipers and smaller rotors. I ended up just rebuilding my rear end with a HD Torsen, GM gears, and HD axleshafts, as well as new bearings and seals. I still have the aluminum drum brakes, but might spring for the Baer kit next year...

Go with a 89 and up rear that has the newer PBR calipers. The older ones are a nightmare to get working and usually never work that well. Also, keep away from the 9-bolt if you plan on a rebuild, the gears will cost a fortune

I think the 9 bolt was dropped by then. The only 3rd gen options you have are 90-92 for 28 spline axles. 89 had the newer disks but was still 26 spline. All the 4th gen cars have 28 spline axles and newer disk brakes however the diff is 2" wider per side.
