just did steering coupler today
I eyeballed the steering shaft in my car and determined that most of the play was in the leather coupler(seen when plastic shield is uncliped and slid backwards. I removed the shaft and carried out a proceedure I heard about from 84IROC in response to camaroZ_85s post "handles like a sponge on the highway" nov 13. I had no idea what I was doing but I managed to get the shaft out of the car.for some reason I unbolted the ps gear box from the frame, all I needed to do was douse the upper part with WD40 because the square part telescopes,it can be rusted and not move too well,it's a good idea to steel wool & oil it before reinstalling.I used my trusty old dremel w/all pupose cutting disc to cut the 4 rivets off the coupler,I would recomend a drill press or a cutting disc air tool though, those rivets were kind'a tough.when I went to auto zone to find the hard ware, I discovered they sell the whole coupler kit for $12,of course the hardware included was useless,at least I got a fresh new "dougnut".I went to Pep boys to find the titainium low head height 5/16"-1.5" bolts that 84IROC mentioned, but had to settle for regular grade 8 hardware. I wish I had looked harder for custom bolts though 'cause the dremel had to be utilized one more time to make room for the spline shaft clamp 11mm bolt.I tightened the coupler bolts extreemly tight.reassemling was sorta tough but I just had another beer and braved my way through it,I used a short 2x2 and a hammer to get the steering columm end back on,then a long flathead to pry the coupler back onto the ps gearbox.make sure the 11mm bolt is not threaded in at all or the clamp won't even slideonto the spline shaft........then the test drive, same junk front end,but wow the wheels actually move when I turn the wheel.I might have made it too tight 'cause the rotation feels a little tight, but it was sorta' like that when I bought it, what a difference!
Glad it worked out for you JYdog. I failed to mention the fact that I work in the aircraft industry thus I have access to all manner of specialized hardware. Aircraft hardware usually does not transfer over to the automobile industry very often, but when it does it is nice. I used to race motorcycles and ATVs and it seems I was always fabricating something for them and I would always try to incorporate titanium hardware into it.
