I have a 1991 z28 with the complete 1LE package. Its time to replace my rear brake pads. When I go in to replace them, I put in the new pads, but I can't push the pison back into the caliper far enough to get the new pads around the rotors... I've tried clamps.. it looks like its hitting the E-brake lever thingy on the caliper. has anybody run into this before... can anybody help??

for starters, it sounds like you aren't using the right tools man... get a tool from it, you can borrow it from AutoZone or something... c'mon man, don't do ******* mechanics

btw: the tool is called a 'caliper compressor'..

here's a quick description of it..

it has a flat piece of flat metal shaped sorta like a flat C... with a bolt going through it and a flat stud thing on the the end that rests in the middle of the caliper... anyways, on the other end of the bolt is a handle, and you just crank on it and push the brake caliper so that the pad will be off the rotor when you put the caliper setup back together...

don't remember to crank on your parking brake a few times after putting the new pads on... pump your brakes a few times too...

the reason you can't push them in is because they are probably the screw in type calipers. they are a pain in the a$$ for starts. you need a special tool that screws the caliper back in while pushing on them at the same time. i could be wrong but i believe your car still used the PITA screw in calipers.

this may not work on a 1LE,but on my rear brakes ('84 Trans Am) I got a corner on the disc and then manuvered them on using a long screw-driver to gently pry the pads open as I slid the caliper over the disc.where theres a will,there's a way!
