upgrading to tighter steering ratio,2.50:1 to 2.25:1
.I still haven't been succesful in finding a stock remanufactured 2.25 ratio steering box,to upgrade from my '84 TA stock 2.50 ratio.I'm trying to order the part for a 3rd gen that has a better turning ratio than my car but will still bolt right into my car.the GMpart no. for my '84 TA is : 7839897,
GMpart no. for an '89 IROC Z28 : 7839512,
could this mean that the '89 Z28 has the tighter steering box? does anyone own an IROC Z28/SS/RS/GTA? do you know the ratio off hand,if not could you count the turns for me? non of the parts dealers seem to know anything about differences in turning ratios.

I can't imagine driving a car with a 2.25 ratio box.

thats the "turns lock to lock" ratio, it is not an unusual ratio, the '84 anniversery TA has a 2.26 TLTL ratio with 12.7:1 (ratio). the gear I'm installing on my car is a 13:1 ratio for "sport equiped" F-bodys, the part for the "non sport equiped" is a 17:1 ratio, these are Autozones remanufactured parts from ATSCO Phoenix,AZ steering co. these refeences where E-mailed to me from an ATSCO representative.

You need a steering box from an IROC or equivalent. This has 2.25 turns and slightly more effort for a better feel. Junk yards will know this as one for an '85 and up Camaro (or Firebird) with 16" wheels.

The turn lock to lock isn't a ratio. If it is, 2.25 to 1. What does the 1 stand for?
I heard about problems with the pressure lines hooking up properly when installing a later model steering box. The older ones having standard thread and the newer ones having metric. You can get or make adapters, or put on new ends, but it's another problem you might have.
