i still have my original shocks and struts and they are shot... i was wondering if these rear shocks are decent....

i dont want any adjustables cause i dont auto cross or race... i just want something at or a little better than stock..... something affordable in price with good quality.... thanks in advance...

 

I think you might want to find something different for the front. Those are drag shocks.

 

KYB's are a good shock, checkout kyboutlet.com they have some great deals.

 

I've got KYB's front and rear and love them. Very easy on the wallet too.

Yeah, the AGX are awesome, I am just running the gr-2's, a slight upgrade from the stockers, I have alot of other things to fix so just went with the basic ones, but they are real nice, firm ride but not too harsh.

 

After looking at the top two brands and there budget busting prices, I went with the following.
Front: KYB GR-2 Struts
Rear: KYB Gas-Adjust shocks

I am pleased with the results. I suggest Sumitt or Tirerack for the best prices & shipping.

i really dont want adjustables i just want a nice set of non adjustable ones...

 

I have the same ones as FlamingPhoenix. GR-2's up front and Gas-A-Justs in the rear. I got the front's on Ebay in like-new condition and the rears from Summit.

Ride is a bit rougher, but you'll have that with any performance shock/strut. Its not harsh at all, and I have to go over several sets of train tracks every day, not to mention the craters that dot PA roads.

Still tuning the suspension so I can't really comment on handling, but its certainly no worse than stock.

 

My stock struts & shocks were Bilstiens on my 87 IROC-Z28 and they lasted for over 100,000 miles before they started leaking. Orignial owner and the KYB's are giving me the same ride... firm.

Don't let the name fool you on the KYB gas-adjust....they adjust by themselves to road conditions.

 

then wow i can get both shock and struts for under 200.... thats what i like to hear....

 

now what springs can i get to replace my old worn out rusty ones... i want stock height ones... dont want lowering ones because exhuast clearance is bad enough already...

 

Forget about replacing springs. More hype then being necessary on 3rd gen car, not like they were heavy haulers. My IROC still has the original springs and I never had a problem with them. So save your money, I would replace the swaybar end links first.

ive searched these threads and people say that the kyb agxs wear out quickly and feel worse than the stockers.... is that true...

 

Well for one you are NOT buying AGX's strut & shocks..those are the adjustable ones. Also the people that are the most vocal against KYB are the ones who spent a small bank account on Bilstiens & Kon'is.

 

my fault i was looking at the agx shocks.... i heard that the ones you guys have are a step up in performance than the stockers... so ima go with the ones you guys said.... do you know are the bushings on the shocks rubber or poly.... i also heard about the moog springs and they are suppose to be stock replacement but people have said that they raise the car up....... my springs are old and they are sagging.... are the moog springs worth it

 

The bushings on the KYB shocks are rubber. The struts don't have any bushings in them, that is in the strut mount.

As for coil springs, Moog is about your only choice for stock replacements AFAIK. They are not expensive and if your stock springs are sagging, its time to replace them. The Moog springs are not lift- or drop-type springs. However, if your old stockers are sagging you will notice a height difference. I replaced my old worn out rear springs with a set of slightly used(5k miles) Moog springs and noticed about a 1/2" difference in height. When I replaced the original front springs with good used(50k miles) front Z28 springs there was no change in height, but that may also be partly due to the fact that I swapped out the original V6 for a SBC 350 at the same time.

As long as your not sagging a lot, and you aren't hitting the bump stops over every bump and hole in the road you should be ok on springs.

The spring are not worth replacing.

 

DJP87Z28 - His springs are sagging yet you say he shouldn't replace them? I'm not following the logic there?

88fastgta - Yes, those are the stock(WS6/Z28) replacement Moog springs.

 

Springs...Designed for the lifetime of the car with normal compression. Also X..number cars on the road and only 3rd gen cars springs sag (what is your definition of sagging springs)??? A lot of hype by some vendors and people with your opinions. If it was a truck, yes. Same for lowering a 3rd gen gen, a of of hype that springs (1/2 to 1") will lower a already low car.

they are only 125 for a complete set...im getting them for peice of mind also.. mine are in bad shape.... i have taken them out and they dont look good.... one of my rear springs have been sitting crooked for a good while and wasnt seated right before i noticed it....

 

You are absolutely right, the springs will sag. My car sits as low as many on here say theirs sits after they lowered it! And, its a V6, not a heavy V8! I have not touched anything suspension-wise on my car, yet! I have plans for it but, just saying, it is sagging horribly!! It does and will happen. I definately suggest replacing the springs!

 

My definition of sagging springs -

1) When I replace my original OEM springs that have 103k miles on them with springs with only 5k miles on them and the car now sits 1/2" higher. That tells me the original springs were sagging.

2) When my bumpstops are hitting on almost every pothole and bump in the road with the OEM springs in the car and this stops after I replace the springs with new(er) ones.

3) When I see any car driving down the road with the rear end practically dragging on the ground and nothing in the back seat/bed. I see this mostly on older(80's & 90's) sedans in my area. Typically Cadillacs, Buicks, Chevy Luminas, and 1/4-ton trucks.

 

yes i really do see this with those cars... i was walking to my car the other day and i noticed that my rear way lower than my front... its been doing this for about a month now and i have 150 000 miles on the springs shocks and retianers....

 

go with the moog springs and KYB GR2s all aorund

 

when doing the struts i have to just about take the a-arms off right... should i do poly bushings on those because those are the only bushings i havent replaced yet.... can i get another set of a-arms off another thirdgen and use them on my car... cause i want to sandblast the arms and paint them and then install the bushings and i dont want to wait a day or two of the car sitting in the garage waiting for my a arms to get done...

 

That's the trap I fell into when I did mine front suspension. It started out with "well, I guess I better swap springs to take the weight of the V8" and ended up with replacing the control arm bushings, balljoints, springs, removing and painting the control arms and the K-member.

Yes, while you have everything out you should probably replace the bushings in the control arms and paint them if you want to. Control arms from any thirdgen will fit. They are the same for all models from 82-92.

 

going poly in the a arms.. would i feel any difference with poly over rubber.... what would i expect...

 

Poly gives you a better feel for the road. You'll feel most bumps and potholes, but its not enough to cause bumpsteer or any problems controlling the steering. Its just enough to let you know they are there. I did notice the steering is a bit more responsive too, but that could partly be due to swapping in a quick-ratio box at the same time. Railroad tracks aren't fun, but other than that its not harsh at all. I'm definitely glad I did it.
