Not Third Gen - '69 Chevelle -

My friend has a 1969 Chevelle, we are trying to put on disc brakes in the front but we can not get the a-arms to seperate. We have taken apart the bolts, and loosened the shocks. The drum brakes are off it is just the spindle, coil spring, and the shock left. Does any one know how to get this off? Any suggestions would be helpful.

BTW anyone know of any sites like ThirdGen for Chevelles?

Get a pickle fork and drive it in between the balljoint and spindle,it should pop lose. Before you do that, put a jack under the lower A Arm or the spring will come flying out at ya when you break the A-Arm loose from the spindle.

Sheesh! Put a spring compressor on the spring before you knock it apart with a pickle fork. Those springs pack alot of potential energy - enough to remove your head from your body!

When I rebuilt the front end of my '70 Chevelle (including a swap to disc brakes), I used a spring compressor for both removing and installing the springs. Much safer that way.

Take the shock out. Take the spring out. Remove the castle nut from the lower ball joint and separate it with the pickle fork. Not too hard.

For a site, go to Team Chevelle: http://www.chevelles.com
The best Chevelle site on the web. Check the Brakes/Suspension forum for more info on your project. We have discussed this over there many times.
