Why does the Chiltons Manual say
to remove the coil springs before the torque arm. If the torque arm is removed first, vehicle damage will result. How is that?
And then it goes on to say remove the track bar mounting bolt at the axle assy and take off pretty much everything. Is this right? I can just jack up the car and take it off without all that hassle. I've never done it but it looks like I can. Is the book wrong? Sure appears to be. Please enlighten me.

The coil springs put a downward force on the back of the axle. (If you look underneath, you'll see the rear spring perches are located "behind" the rear lower control arm attaching points.) This makes the front of the axle want to swing up. (The axle pivots on the rear-lower-control-arm-to-axle bolts.) The torque arm's attached to the front of the axle, so it will also swing up, and hit the floorboards.
You don't need to remove the track bar to remove the torque arm.

Oh, okay. You'd have to pull the springs anyway before doing the rear LCA's, otherwise the axle will twist a bit, and you'll have a hard time aligning the LCA bolt holes.

You don't have to remove the springs to change the LCA's. Just block all the tires and do one at a time. If the axle moves too much, put the rear most bolt in, put the tire on, lower the car and rotate the tire, and then put the other bolt in.. thats what i did.
