idler arm replacement

idler arm replacement

i went and got an alignment a few days ago and they told me my idler arm was bad and they would replace it for 165 bux. how hard is it to do yourself and are there any tech articles on it? please help

wow they must of had a boat payment due. look at your idler arm, how hard does it look to you to replace? couple of bolts and a castle nut. just set it back up like the old one came off.

All you need is a pickle fork and some basic hand tools. No matter what the shop is trying to charge you, be assured they are ripping you off. No love for auto shops!

Make sure you scribe around the idler arm where it attatches to the front subframe, and install the new one in the same position. The pitman arm and idler arm have to follow the same horizontal plane throughout the steering angle. There is a whole elaborate procedure involving something with the LCA bolts, but just scribing and reinstalling in the same place has always worked for me. Have fun, and get a MOOG or TRW arm.
