Steering problem

The steering on our 87 Camaro does not try to return to center when you let go of it in a turn. Just stays in the turn. Had it aligned about 5000 miles ago. Is the caster off? My mechanic thinks it is more than that but doesn't know what is wrong.

Re: Steering problem

Could be a worn out steering box. I talked to Lee Power Steering and found them to be very helpful diagnosing steering issues. You might want to give them a try.

I ended up having them rebuild my steering box.

Re: Steering problem

Car now has new steering box and new power steering pump/ Castor is within limits and camber and toe-in to specs. No binding in the steering column when disconnected, no binfding in the tie rod assemblies when disconnected. This thing still drives like a Mack truck before power steering. It does not want to return to center when you let go of the wheel in a turn. P205/7015 tires, shouldn't be a problem. I'm stumped! Any ideas out there?

Front steering parts are 23 yrs old, replaced everything on my car except the steering box. Guess what, steers and drives like a new car.

Re: Steering problem

I replaced inner/outer tie rods, center link, connectors and idler arm through rock auto for less than $100. The difference in steering is incredible. Even the cheapest new parts make the 20+ year old ones feel like crap.
I'm going to pull the steering gear next and do the bench adjustment and replacing rag joint. Should be better than new.
