275/40/17's?

I am looking for new rims for my 92 firebird. I think I will run 275/40/17's on 17x9.5 with 5.5" backspace on the front but am not sure about the back. I would like to run a bigger tire and I like the centerline rims and don't want a custom offset. Will the 17x11 with 6" backspacing fit? What would be the biggest tires I could fit on those. If they don't fit, what is the biggest tires I could fit on the 17x9.5 on the rear? I might lower the front but I will probably leave the back in the air. I don't mind doing a little hammering or slight modifications to make them fit. If anyone has any pics please post them. Thanks

I have an issue of Chevy High Performance and they say that 17x9.5 with 275/40R17 fit fine with the stock car lowered 1" all around on a 91 Z28

Thanks for the reply. 2 Questions: first do you know where I can see a copy of that magazine such as an internet site. Second I was hoping to go with larger tires on back than a 285, maybee a 315 or so. Thanks for the help.

Please don't hate me buuuutttt I saw a mid 90's Mustang that had a brand new set of Torque thrusts mounted on it and it looked very very nice so I had to go take a closer look and it had 335/40-17's on it. Those were very wide and they were BFG Comp T/A's! Oh man was I drooling. If that combination would fit on a 3rd gen I would be all over it! The guy wasn't around so I don't know what size the rims are but I imagine they had to be at least 17 X 9.5.

Does anyone else do that? you know go up to a parked car in a parking lot and look it over? it almost makes you feel weird. All I wanted to know was what tire size it was but I can just imagine what I'd be like if I came out of the store and saw some shmo I didn't even know looking over my baby.

would there be any differnce between a z28 and a RS as far as the avaible width in the back?

I've done that too, but I'm always careful to leave my hands behind my back, because that's what I'd rather see if I'd came out and someone was checking out my car. It's just hard to tell if someone is checking it out out of true automotive appreciation or premeditation of theft.

BTW, I have that size tire on all four corners on my RS, only rubs a wee bit on left turns in reverse, but nothing a couple whacks won't fix.
