Removing Front Springs

On one of the car TV shows I saw them put a jack under the control arm, undo the spindle and lower the jack to take the coil spring out. Can we do that on our cars? Is this safe? These guys on these shows can be full of **** sometimes and I was wandering if this was one of those times.

I've heard of people doing it that way but it seems too dangerous to me, there's so much pressure on the jack that the control arm might slide off and the spring may come flying out. The way I did it when I took my springs out was to disconnect the brake line and the top of the strut and lower the whole assembly including the control arm down until it is as low as you can get it (you have to have the car raised pretty high to do this or the control arm will not go down far enough) when it is down the spring is almost decompressed and then you can just knock it out with light taps from a hammer. I also tied a rope from the spring to one side of the control arm to keep it from flying out while I lowered the control arm.
